John Dodson admits his UFC release came out of left field.

That’s because Dodson says he was one fight into a new UFC deal. But after losing a unanimous decision to Merab Dvalishvili at UFC 252 in August 2020 and three of his past four outings, the promotion decided to part ways with him.

“We just renewed,” Dodson told MMA Junkie. “I just renewed my contract and they were like, ‘Eh, you know what? You’re out.’ I was like, ‘What the hell? First fight in and I’m done? Wow. Thanks a lot, you guys.’

“I just figured I wasn’t the fit anymore. COVID happened. Of course, that’s a big factor in everything else that’s coming through. It’s hard for everyone to train and everything else that’s going on. But if you really think about it, they can get a bunch of younger fighters who want to fight in the UFC who are – probably 10-8 new fighters with the paycheck they were paying me.”

The two-time UFC flyweight title challenger has since competed for XMMA twice and split his two appearances there. Dodson is the newest addition to Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship and will face fellow ex-UFC fighter Ryan Benoit in the co-main event of BKFC 28, which takes place Aug. 27 at Rio Rancho Events Center in Rio Rancho, N.M., outside Albuquerque.

The Season 14 “Ultimate Fighter” winner will be returning to his original weight class, in which his only two UFC losses came to ex-flyweight king Demetrious Johnson.

“It’s a great opportunity for me to go ahead and showcase to everybody, and not only to showcase, but to remind them that I’m still one of the most deadliest strikers out there,” Dodson said. “And if I can keep on knocking people out, I can be picked up by any organization.

“I still want to be bouncing around back and forth, and bareknuckle is going to give me the opportunity to knock out as many flyweights as possible – and that’s what I want to do. I want to go back down to flyweight and show everybody that I still reign supreme and the king of that division.”
